Overview

Project Management is one of the top two areas of studies for advanced education. It is used in virtually all businesses. But even with its popularity and with the many courses offered on it, there is still a lack of good Project Managers. The problem stems from the fact that many programs teach more than is needed to be a good PM. They also focus on memorizing all sorts of information on PM, but not on its application and the use of the information delivered. While getting tools and information on PM is important, demonstrating their proper use is more important.

This webinar focuses on Project Management basics. By learning these a person is then set to take the next step, focusing on their use and demonstrating that one can do so properly and effectively. This sets those who are just starting to obtain the basics from which to further grow. For those who are already involved in PM this adds some new skills as well as reinforcing what they already know and may not be using properly. That is why whatever level one is at; they can gain something by taking this webinar.

The course covers exactly what a project is. Too often people think that completing regular tasks is completing a project. It is not. A project is meant to change the daily activities and potentially add some new things to what people do on a regular basis.

Once this is established, we cover what are the characteristics of a project regarding time, cost, and deliverables. All three of these must be included to have a proper and ultimately a successful project.
We also cover Project Management philosophy, covering: What is the purpose of the project, what is each person’s role, how the PM then manages the people and work and removes obstacles that prevent people from getting their work done.

We then move on to important tools that are used in a project. These include:

Project Charter – The most important tool. A charter outlines all the key aspects of the project covering the reason for the project, its potential cost, timing and ultimately what it will deliver. This is the project bible that stays throughout the course of the project and is changed as needed.

Budget – The estimated cost of the project both in expense and capital terms. These are both estimated and then tracked throughout the project.

Work activities – Identifying each activity needed to complete the project successfully.

Schedule – Identification of and timing of all project activities and how each relates to the others.

Risk identification – Identifying what risks can crop up that cause project problems, delays, or failures and how to deal with these.

Postmortem – After the project is completed, a review of both good and bad happenings to learn what to do and not do in future projects.

All of these are things a good PM develops, manages, and controls. These establish the solid foundation a person then needs to build upon to become a good or great PM.

Why you should Attend

To be a good Project Manager, you need to start somewhere. The best place to start is to learn about what good Project Mangers do and what sets them apart from those who are not so good. This webinar does that. It covers in a short time what good Project Managers know and do. It provides a great foundation for those who want to either get into Project Management or for those who are already in and are struggling with success. As someone who has been involved in Project Management for over 40 years, dealing with hundreds of companies, I have had a great deal of success in managing projects.

I share my approach with you to get you set on the right course. This in and of itself will not make you a good Project Manager. The next step is to learn more and then do, do, do. This is a good start on that road.
