"Public speaking is listed as America's number-one fear, before death at number five, and loneliness, weighing in at number seven. Guess that means that most of us are less afraid of dying alone than of making fools of ourselves in front of others," - So stated Westside Toastmasters in an article entitled Business is a Contact Sport.

Public speaking is a requirement for business success. As businesspeople, we must be able to articulate our thoughts in front of people in the boardroom, in management meetings, and sometimes in formal speaking engagements. This presentation provides a roadmap for successful speaking with ease and confidence.

In this seminar we will examine the relationship of self-esteem to nervous tension. We will offer specific suggestions on how and where to develop your skill and poise as a speaker.

Preparation is one of the keys to reducing anxiety. We will show you how to prepare and what to look for during preparation so that your speech is the best it can be. The great golden age magician Howard Thurston used to stand behind the curtain as the audience entered the theatre. He nervously watched as people took their seats in anticipation of seeing his performance. As each person sat, he would repeat these words to himself, "I love my audience, I love my audience."

This mantra shifted his focus from his own nervous tension to the wellbeing of those he was there to entertain, and it shifted his emotional state from nervous to excited. You too can learn to change your perspective so that you are ready and excited rather than fearful.

If you suffer from debilitating nerves, this seminary will offer practical suggestions and guidance for managing your out-of-control emotions. You will learn how to prepare, how to use notes or cue sheets during your presentation. You will also learn to identify and manage imposter syndrome and the physical responses to fear including:

  • Stomach and gastrological problems

  • Short or rapid breathing

David was the HR Director of Richcroft Inc., a non-profit, from 1994 to 2020. During that time, the company grew from 90 employees to over 500. David was a department of one until 2007. He also served as their Training Director, developing and delivering training to every employee.

In December 2020, David became the HR Manager for Taylor Technologies, a manufacturing company in Sparks, Maryland. As a department of one, David ran every aspect of HR from payroll to benefits administration, recruiting, onboarding, and performance management.
